Often, people comment that their documents are safe because they are using Microsoft 365 and OneDrive – WRONG!!!!
OneDrive is an amazing device synchronization tool that has many many advantages. But one thing is for sure is that it cannot replace a backup. If your laptop gets stolen or if you buy a new home computer then OneDrive will allow you to simply log in and download all your documents to the new device -awesome!! However, the issue arises when you get a corrupt or infected file through malware, ransomware or any other variant of virus. This virus will simply be replicated across all your devices and then what??
Yes, OneDrive has a feature ( because it is really awesome ) that allows you to log into your OneDrive portal, right click the infected file and then click “Restore previous version” and voila your file is back to normal. Crisis averted, right?
But what happens if you have thousands of those infected files? How many leave days would you have to take and will your mouse survive the thousands of right clicks you will need to perform to get back to normality? Nope I didn’t think so, so this is why a backup is the only true way to protect your data and your business.
We all insure our valuable assets like our house, our car and yes we even insure our life because some wise old insurance man said it was the right thing to do for those left behind. So why do we treat our business data with such disregard? Believe that nothing bad will happen? In todays digital landscape your data is constantly at risk. As we’ve previously experienced rioting and flood damage is a reality that can prove disastrous for your business. This is why a proper backup plan is essential to secure the ongoing performance of your business data.
Now I’m no insurance salesperson or private wealth consultant. I am, however, a business owner who is petrified of losing my company data. I backup every bit of data every day and ensure that I check it’s effectiveness every month. We all use Microsoft 365 with OneDrive BUT we still do a separate backup of our data. After all, it’s better safe than sorry!
PSI IT Services offers a number of home, small business and corporate backup plans. We start with the Individual Microsoft 365 backup plan where all your office documents are backed up automatically for only R 79.00 excl vat per month. PS: if you think I am full of it here is a article on The Right Way to Protect Your Data to read so you can make up your own mind.
